Google and Verizon Wireless strategic partnership to roll-out Android phones in the US market. A serious threat to the Iphone monopoly.

About time! Google’s attack to the Iphone brainwashing of the masses has started. This morning, Google and Verizon Wireless announced an agreement to deliver mobile applications and devices. The companies will develop several Android-based devices preloaded with apps.

The first new phones are expected at market within weeks. Two will be released before the end of the year and they will support Google Voice and have Google’s Android Market preinstalled.

During a conference call, Google CEO Eric Schmidt applauded Verizon’s “openness,” saying it was “enormously surprising, given the history and the old-line nature of telcos….In Verizon, somehow, the leadership has decided to embrace a very different philosophy, which works very, very well with the Internet.” Indeed a surprise to see openness and telcos together in a sentence, and in 2009, not 2020…

Other noteworthy recent facts:

-Gartner predicts Android to grab No. 2 spot by 2012 - Ahead of the Iphone!

-Amazon is rolling out 1-click mobile payments

-Palm Pre just announced a new open app anti-Apple strategy (well, on a different magnitude than Google, but still they’re trying)

…The day the Iphone will stop ruling the world is closer today.

Translations are becoming a big business. Google just released the Translator Gadget and Facebook the Translation for Facebook Connection

The monopoly of English in the Internet is long time gone. The Internet penetration in non-English speaking countries is through the roof, and tools to help webmasters and site owners go local are spreading very quickly.

Today Google announced the introduction of a new translation widget that, on the fly, displays the content in the visitor preferred tongue. It is a no-brainer to install it, a simple snippet of code that you can put anywhere on your site. The quality of the translations is not the highest, nonetheless this is a free and quick way to get your site, or a rough idea of it, spread in roughly 50 languages.

A less immediate approach, but more powerful in the medium term is the crowd-sourcing one, which Facebook adopted very successfully for its own site. Today the social network announced that it is taking it a step further with the release of a new tool,Translations for Facebook Connect. Translations for Facebook Connect will be a free tool for developers to crow-sourced the translation of their sites. Once activated, the tool will display content in a visitor’s native language if they use Facebook Connect.

A few months ago, following the Facebook example, Ted launched the Open Translation Project, with the aim of providing translated and transcribed videos in multiple languages. Below you can watch the first video I translated in Italian, an amazing talk by Chris Anderson on the Long Tail of Technology.

Crowd-sourcing might seem a time-consuming solution, but the advantages are many:

-Quality of the translation;

-Engagement of your “fan” base: a user who is involved as a translator is participating to the making of your site. Additional loyalty programs, such as exclusive benefits, could strenghten this sense of belonging;

-Word-of-Mouth: a translator is a free ambassador of your brand and site.

So pick your approach and get your Babel started!

And how do you move people from free to premium?

Seth Godin’s 3 minute answer:

Create Quality > Get Attention> Connect >Monetize= Free to Premium

One example is musicians: the more music they give away for free, the more money they can make from live gigs and records.

Another example is Seth himself: by giving away for free his “Unleash The Idea Virus” book, he ended-up selling more full-priced hard-cover books than his previous book. Readers check the book and if they decide they like it (i.e. if there’s quality to it), they will buy it and they did. No one buys business books anymore without knowing what they are about.

Internet has become a radio for ideas.

Digital Advertising is expected to hit $65bln in 2010. Companies are getting ready: ComScore and Omniture partnership, Google Display Ad Exchange, Facebook and Nielsen Brand Lift, Adobe buying Omniture

According to a forecast from ad firm GroupM, the Internet will account for 15% of global ad spending in 2010, hitting $65bn annually, as advertisers continue to shift their budget from traditional media to digital

6% of it will go to Mobile which is expected to experience the biggest increase (+19%) as mobile apps continue to spread;

43% will be allocated to search, which continues its steady growth;

34% should be the share of display ads, the only sector who might see a decrease of -1%

Who will win this growing budget? And will they be able to prove the effectiveness of the digital medium? All major players are warming up a the idea of the $65bn, announcing new tools or partnerships or mergers.

A few very recent facts:

Google has started it push on display, now folded into its ad exchange market, where it should be easier to buy and sell inventory.

Adobe bought Omniture.

Omniture is partnering with ComScore – so expect ComScore data soon to show up into your analytics dashboard.

Facebook and Nielsen have united to create BrandLift, opt-in polls which should provide advertisers with evidence that the Facebook value is not measured just by clicks (else it would be very small compared to the size of its audience).

Will 2010 be a tipping point for digital advertising? How far is it from delivering its promise? I guess we’ll see more such news in the coming months.

Other times, companies speak in riddles. So you know that, when you’re using their service, you’re contributing to the making of something different than what you’ve been told. And in the near future, you might find yourself in a totally different reality.

A media-rich page loads dozens of files and can take as much as 10 seconds to load over broadband, which can be frustrating” . Google FastFlip is also an Iphone and Android app.

All of this is surely very honest and very awesome.

But it is also true that, only a week ago, Google unveiled plans for a new micro-payment system, that would allow Google and third parties to charge for micro-transactions, in this specific case, pieces of content. Not hard to see the “other” picture taking shape, one where we are not only offered access to a faster interface, but also pay for the “micro-content” that is relevant for us. This smart publishing platform will learn what each user is most likely to pay for and deliver it into the most appropriate format and to the chosen device. The transaction might happen inside a mobile store, a Google News Store or whatever modern and customizable “newsstand” will replace the current portals.

The atomization of infotainment is a fact that few can deny. Not yet convinced? Take a peak at Microsoft’s view of the next-generation newspaper. The paradigm shift has yet to happen, but we know that as we fast flip through today’s news, we’re tip-toeing into the water of a new world.

As with all radical innovations, some will pay for it. News corporations have failed to deliver any innovation and are looking at this experiment with a nervous mind. With so many players involved, Google had no choice but to downplay this as an experiment out of its Lab.

2) Facebook Lite and Tagging

What are they? In Facebook’s words, tagging will enable users “to talk about their real-world connections” and “interact with each other more.” As far as Facebook Lite is concerned, Meredith Chin, a Facebook spokeswoman, says that it is meant for people with very slow Internet connections or new users who want an introduction to the core features of the site”. For now, it’s been rolled out only for the US and India. The US is known for not shining in the top 10 broadband countries worldwide, but calling it a country with slow connections seems a little bit of a stretch as well pretending that any US person needs a 101 Facebook class…

Again the feeling is to be in front of a stepping stone to something bigger. Talking about Twitter envy seemed the most obvious and most common reaction. The sequence of the changes that Facebook has undergone in 2009 seems to provide evidence that something else is cooking up and Twitter might be the framework:

-Public Data: in June, Facebook changed the privacy settings to allow users to make their profile and streams accessible to everyone, i.e. public.

-Searchable Data: in August, another major change was introduced, the public timeline search.

-Open-Source, Real-time Streams: in April, Facebook opened its streams via API. Later in August it acquired Friendfeed and used its web framework as an open-source for third parties. In other words, if you’re a developer, you can now pull Facebook data into your program, and use it in real-time. In a Twitter fashion. Think of apps like the Seesmic one.

Tagging and Lite are just the latest, but not the last, tweaks to the metamorphosis of Facebook. Is Twitter the vision? For sure Twitter deserves some credit, since it has unlocked new possible ways of monetizing public conversations by making the relationships among users and users and brands actionable in terms of engagement and context. Yet to be proven, for sure. But the rush to the next age of advertising is open. CPM was a failed value proposition, search was the brainchild of web 1.0, web 2.0 is still waiting for its Messiah.

Still, Facebook is richer in nature than a Twitter and its Twitterification seems like one of the many possibilities. When you have 300million users, 65million of which already on mobile, a brand that is one of top 10 most trusted in the US, and cash in the house, there are a lot of possible and parrallel universes that you can build. But when your business model is still a work in progress, the communication can not be forthcoming. Jobs knows he is offering a product that can improve your experience with music and video consumption. And he can be bullish about wanting a piece of the video camera business.

Facebook wants to connect the world, but needs brands to pay for its mission. So he can only be half bullish. For now.
